Frequently asked questions.

Where do I source my pounamu?

I source pounamu through a variety of means, always ensuring that it is obtained respectfully and responsibility. My process include carefully searching the beaches of the West Coast, sourcing pounamu through trusted online channels, and working closely with local iwi/Hapu/local Kaitiaki Rūnanga to obtain pounamu in accordance with cultural traditions and sustainability principles. Being informed helps ensure your pounamu is ethically sourced and respectfully handled.

Can You Buy Pounamu for Yourself?

Yes, you absolutely can buy a pounamu gift for yourself. While this question comes up often, the answer is straightforward. Traditionally in Māori culture, pounamu (taonga) was bought or gifted to others—such as friends, family, or someone special. Māori also used different pounamu taonga to signify status within their iwi/hapū or family. This tradition has been passed down through generations.

Do you have to bless your taonga?

Blessing a taonga is not mandatory, but is a respected and valued practice within Māori culture, particularly when given as a gift. Your taonga will come with a karakia, a traditional prayer, and you may choose to have it blessed if you wish.

Can i fossick for Pounamu in New Zealand?

Fossicking for pounamu is legal in certain places and illegal in others.

Anyone is allowed to fossick along the beaches and coastlines of the West Coast of the South Island. However, it is limited to what one can carry unaided (other than a backpack) within a 24-hour period, as stated on the website of (Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu) (https://ngaitahu.iwi.nz) .

Fossicking elsewhere - such as lakes and rivers, whether on DOC land or private land is not permitted to the general public unless approved by the appropriate authorities (e.g., landowner, Pounamu Management Officer, or local Kaitiaki Rūnanga). If you're unsure, it's best to contact the relevant parties listed on the Ngāi Tahu website.
