Māori also used different pounamu taonga to signify status within their iwi/hapū or family. This tradition has been passed down through generations.

Do you have to bless your taonga?

Fossicking elsewhere - such as lakes and rivers, whether on DOC land or private land is not permitted to the general public unless approved by the appropriate authorities (e.g., landowner, Pounamu Management Officer, or local Kaitiaki Rūnanga).
